Instead of feeling satisfied after conquering a brain-teasing gravity puzzle, I had to memorize tedious enemy patterns. Rather than introducing new puzzles that further test your problem-solving abilities, it presents basic platforming sections that task you with dodging enemies. Ibb & Obb offers this feeling frequently at its best, but things eventually take a turn for the uninspired.Įarly levels regularly introduce new gimmicks (stay close to your partner to light up dark levels), gameplay elements (bounce pads, new enemies), and clever new puzzles, but the creativity starts to peter out in later stages. The best games in this genre throw puzzles at you that seem wholly impossible at first glance, but give an immense feeling of satisfaction when completed. Many puzzles involve momentum, and you find high places from which to fling yourself in an effort to reach platforms on the other plane of gravity. Most stages are split in two, and the titular, blob-like characters can travel on the upper path or the reversed-gravity lower half. What makes things tricky is a multitude of gravity-based puzzles. Navigating the minimalist 2D stages is simple, requiring only the analog stick and a jump button. The goal of Ibb & Obb is simple – get two characters together at the end of a stage. The end result is worth your time, but not without some annoying quirks. Indie developer Sparpweed attempts to join that club with the charming Ibb & Obb. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!įor more frequent updates about the state of the game, you can find ibb and obb on Facebook and Twitter. This console generation has seen an explosion in the popularity of co-op play, and games like Portal 2 and Ilomilo successfully introduced teamwork to the puzzle genre. I look forward to hearing your opinions and keeping you up-to-date on the development. Currently we’re polishing the game and setting up the online multiplayer mode. This is our first production and it’s very exciting to see it getting closer and closer to release. In the end, puzzles become quite complex, but by then you should have become well practised in double gravity acrobatics. Some change the way you can move around, like the gravity bubbles, while others change what you can see depending on the distance between the players. Throughout the game new mechanics are introduced that add to the previous ones. His music has a pleasant melancholic feel to it that really fits the visual mood of the game. I’ve been a fan of his music for a long time and was super happy when he said he’d gladly join the project. The same transition can be found in the music, all of which is composed by Kettel. Visually, the mood starts out very colorful and adventurous, slowly changing into a somewhat darker atmosphere. In the game you explore five worlds consisting of three levels each. For example, when one player takes out an enemy the other tries to be ready on the other side of the split to fetch the reward. All elements in the game are designed for two, ranging from the way you solve puzzles to handling enemies. The gameplay revolves around a world with two directions of gravity, but even more so it’s about the interaction between the players. With ibb and obb we’ve tried to do just that. It has always surprised me how few games are really designed around two-player interaction. My fondest memories of games are those that I played together with my brother or close friends. Looking back at that now, it means a lot more than I thought it did. In the earliest stages of development, the game was called Brothers. Ibb and obb is a cooperative puzzle-platformer with a gravity twist that will launch on PSN next spring.
